tip top

Googling Lilys, I came across this performance of “Nanny in Manhattan” on Top of the Pops:

As some have already noted, it’s particularly interesting because many Top of the Pops performances were mimed, resulting in performances like this priceless one by Nirvana.

YouTubing Top of the Pops is a dangerous descent into staying up far too late and frying your eyes in front of the computer screen, but it results in some pretty entertaining glimpses into pop’s past. There’s Kate Bush flanked by absurd drummer boys and a keytarist. Those Radiohead kids. Danish superduos. Classic Morrissey. The Kinks. The Rolling Stones’ first #1 UK hit. And on and on.

And if that’s somehow not enough, I suggest you check out the Old Grey Whistle Test.
