Albums of 2008: Day 29 – Fuck Buttons – Street Horrrsing

When I saw Fuck Buttons live, their set was pretty much a run-through of Street Horrrsing. Or maybe it wasn’t. It’s hard to keep track of such things when you’re preoccupied by such blissful washes of sound.

This album gains steam at such a laid-back, comfortable pace that you only realize the force that it has amassed when it’s too late to dismount (right around when the first distorted, screaming vocals come in). Then you start to feel the angels grasping at your hands and the devils gnawing at your feet.

And then Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power reel things back in and let you catch your breath. “OK,” you think, “That was quite intense, but now I can relax.” And then they pull the exact same trick on you again, only on an even greater scale, and you love them all the more for it. So much so that, once you get to the end of this harrowing listening experience, you’ll probably just pop it in and start over again.

After the break, listen to “Sweet Love for Planet Earth.”
