I think there are only a handful of indie pop acts that I would recognize before a single lyric has dropped from the singer’s mouth. Andrew Bird is one of those few. From the first seconds of strings, acoustic picking and pristine whistling, “Oh No” just screams with the songwriter’s signature style. And that’s not a bad thing. As the opening track on Bird’s upcoming album Noble Beast, the tune puts the seasoned fan in a comfortable, familiar seat, where they are ready to soak in the rest of the album. For newcomers, it’s like Bird has handed them a musical business card, letting them know that, if this sounds up their alley, they might like to schedule some time to sit down and enjoy everything else he has to offer.
