Wilco (the noise)

Wilco is streaming their new album, entitled Wilco (The Album), on their website. I’m enjoying what I’ve heard so far. “Bull Black Nova” is a particularly solid jam. It’s got a Sonic Youth cadence to it and builds into a terrific noisy freak out from Nels Cline, whom I interviewed late last year. I think Nels’ input since joining Wilco has been really terrific. He’s an unparalleled axeman, and he deftly adds a texture that is simultaneously restrained and highly kinetic. That spirit seems to have rubbed off on the rest of the band, too. Even as “Bull Black Nova” reaches its climax, there is a skillful tension that holds the whole thing together. You can find the track here.

In additional Nels Cline goodness, my friend Kaveh recorded a Nels Cline Singers last June and wrote up a nice description of his experience at the show.
